Winter Getaways In Wenatchee

Experience Eastern Washington in all its snowy splendor.

Though central Washington isn’t exactly known for its hoppin’ party scene or bustling downtown area, the region boasts 300 days of sunshine every year and an annual lineup of events that are perfect for a quiet weekend getaway with friends and family. If you’re looking for snowy excursions, live music and award-winning local wines at your disposal, check out some of the events in the Wenatchee Valley area this winter.

Twilight Showshoe Treks at Mission Ridge

Beginning Saturday, Dec. 31, visitors (12 and older) to Mission Ridge Ski Resort can enjoy a guided, star-lit snowshoe trek across the eastern Cascade Mountains. These scenic, one-hour excursions begin at 5 p.m., and will happen every Saturday until the end of February.  Snowshoe rentals are $15 per day and the guided trek is $10 per person.

Mission Ridge Mountain Music Festival

Eight Saturdays of live music at Mission Ridge’s Hampton Lodge kicks off on New Year’s Eve, with the smooth reggae sounds of Seattle’s own Adrian Xavier. The festival is free of charge and will feature other artists, such as folk musician Michael Carlos (Jan. 14) and guitar rock group Cody Beebe & The Crooks (Feb. 4).

Hampton Lodge will offer their full menu each night with varied dinner specials. A full selection of draft beer and local wine — as well as hard cider from East Wenatchee’s Snowdrift Cider Co. — will also be available. Each 150-minute show starts at 6:30 p.m.

Wenatchee Winter Wine Gala

Wine and dine from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, and the proceeds raised will benefit the programs and services offered by the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center.  Enjoy wine from award-winning vinters and delectable bites from some of the best chefs in central Washington while listening to the melodies of  the Wenatchee Valley Symphony and classical guitarist Charlie Solbrig. Tickets are $35 for museum members or $40 for non-members.

Red Wine & Chocolate at the Wenatchee Valley Visitor Center

In true Valentine’s Day style, local wineries will present their wares at the Wenatchee Valley Visitor Center’s Wine Tasting Bar. On Feb. 10-11 and 17-18, award-winning red wines from White Heron Cellars (Quincy), Saint Laurent Winery (Malaga), Martin Scott Winery (East Wenatchee), and Chateau Faire le Pont Winery (Wenatchee) will be expertly paired with luscious chocolate desserts to satisfy your sweet tooth. Tasting prices at this foodie extravaganza are only $4, and can be applied to wine purchases.

HogLoppet-2007-0023

24th Annual Hög Loppet at Mission Ridge

On Saturday, Feb. 25, Wenatchee visitors will be introduced to the Hög Loppet — a non-competitive, ski trek that caters to experienced skiers. Participants begin at the top of Mission Ridge, then traverse the eastern Cascade Mountains to Blewett Pass, where they’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the valley below. Skiers are well-cared for during the event: aid stations accompanied with snacks, water and emergency equipment will be available throughout the course. The Hög Loppet is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m., and entry is $20 per person.

About Lena Park

Born in Buffalo, raised in Federal Way, and educated at Boston College, Lena has been exploring cities from coast to coast her whole life. Though she desperately misses the snarky irreverence of Bostonians, she loves living in this green and rainy city again as a bona fide Seattleite. In the years that she’s been gone from the Pacific Northwest, Lena has been busy writing for sports blogs, literary journals, college newspapers, and social justice-based magazines. When she’s not hunting for a hole-in-the-wall neighborhood joint, furiously scribbling in her notebook, or busy clacking away at her computer, Lena finds Zen in playing baseball with the Seattle Diamonds, sipping on a PBR at Lottie’s, and watching reruns of Friday Night Lights while drooling over sinfully delicious Tim Riggins.

Too bad the opening line in this article starts on a negative beat…."Though central Washington isn’t exactly known as a vacation destination…". We need to work on this so people DO think of us as a vacation destination, right? Great info on Mission Ridge!
