Wine Down: Big Sky Wine Escape

Wine tasting under a big sky may be the perfect escape for any Seattle city dweller.

As summer lingers into late-September, winner of Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence for two consecutive years Rainbow Ranch (RR) Lodge in Gallatin Gateway, Mont., will be offering classes on wine and its intricacies into early October.

The classes, led by certified Sommelier Emily Todd whose wine knowledge is backed by extensive culinary savvy and award-winning wine lists, will assist in grasping the basics of the reds and whites while providing an acute understanding of wine across the board.

Though one of the classes has since ended, White Wine 101, there are three others that are sure to satisfy any oenophile or wine rookie. If the itch to learn more about the whites persist, however, Todd’s well earned wine expertise through the Court of Master Sommeliers, a leading Certification Board in wine service, can be handed down in the following classes.

Red vs White, Sept. 27, will explore the inherent differences between the two rivals, ending with a food pairing lesson and tutored red wine tasting.

International Varieties, Oct. 1, takes a look at grapes around the world and the wines that are derived from them. Tastings will include that of Merlot and Pinot Noir.

It’s All About Red, Oct. 4, focuses solely on red wine and the intrinsic components that bring it to life. There will also be instruction on how to maintain a reds vitality, all of which will be topped off with a tasting.

Though Rainbow Ranch Lodge in Montana sounds like quite a drive to gather wine knowledge, about 11 hours from Seattle to be exact, the long trek leads to a wondrous escape into the splendor of nature. Resting in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, RR, an all-season, cozy 21-room lodge, offers much more than just wine. Yellowstone National Park and Big Sky Resort lie just beyond reach, offering a plethora of activities for any rugged outdoorsmen.

When not becoming knowledgable in the world of wine or taking to the wilderness, RR offers spa-like amenities for relaxation and unparalleled Montana ranch-to-table cuisine from locally sourced vendors in the Rainbow Ranch Restaurant.

To plan an escape before overcast skies rule the day, call 1-800-937-4132 or visit the RR website rainbowranchbigsky.com to make reservations and learn more about the classes and amenities offered. Note that all wine classes must be booked in advance by calling (406) 995-4132.
