We Tried Hungryroot for Two Weeks. Here’s What We Thought.

Convenient and simple breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert

Hungryroot is a subscription meal service boasting “healthy indulgent meals delivered to your doorstep”. I first heard about Hungryroot last year, but didn’t get around to trying it. It’s on the expensive side and I’m getting pretty tired of keeping up with my subscription food deliveries. Sometimes I forget to skip a week and get home to discover a meal kit delivery I didn’t want. I found a coupon for $30 off my first order that you can use too, which brought my total down to $39 for 3 meals (2 servings each), 4 sides, snacks, or sweets. I figured I’d give it a shot and share the experience.

ORDERING

You can customize your order and it rotates every week with some evergreen options that are always on the menu (Black Bean Brownie Batter, Roasted Red Pepper Quinoa Bowl, etc.). Most of the dishes are ready-to-eat or can be cooked in 10 minutes or less. 

THE DISHES

Kale Pesto Sautéed Greens

It took me less than 10 minutes to prepare from start to finish. It was both healthy and tasty with broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, kale, kohlrabi, Napa cabbage, and a nut-free pesto. I ate half for dinner (paired with the Sweet Potato Soup) and the rest for lunch the next day.

Spiced Coconut Sweet Potato Soup

I love soup all the time, but especially when it’s cold outside. Finding soups without dairy at the hot bar is hard to find and I often don’t have time or energy to menu plan, grocery shop, and make it from scratch. This soup was spicy, creamy, and easy to make in about 12 minutes. I cooked down the sweet potato ribbons, blended it with the coconut curry sauce and water, and then it was ready to eat.

They are OK for a snack, but it’s not enough for lunch. The flavor is decentI preferred the Lemon Artichoke over the Roasted Red Pepper. The instructions say mix and microwave for 15-20 seconds, but it probably needs closer to 30 seconds. No one wants cold quinoa. Upon closer inspection, I realized that both are shelf stable and don’t need to be refrigerated until it’s open, which means it is pumped full of preservatives (the expiration date is June 2018). For that reason, I wouldn’t order it again. I want fresh on the go food!

Almond Chickpea Cookie Dough

The consistency is a little off-putting, but it’s pretty tasty and I’d likely order it again. You have to go into with the mindset of, “THIS IS NOT COOKIE DOUGH” and then it’s a fairly yummy snack.

Black Bean Brownie Batter

I browsed some customer reviews prior to ordering and everyone mentioned this. Everyone also recommended baking it (it can be eaten raw or baked). I baked half of it and ate half raw with a spoon. Whew! It doesn’t taste like black beans at all. It’s not a “real” brownie, but it hits the spot and it’s a whole heck of a lot better for you.

Crunchy Walnut Date Muesli

I love muesli and overnight and oats (which they also offer) for breakfast. It’s quick, filling, and relatively healthy. It’s perfect for me when I’m rushing to work in the morningI can add water or almond milk and it’s ready to eat.

  1. The Starter Set includes 3 meals (2 servings each), 4 sides, snacks, or sweets for $69.
  2. The Good Life includes 5 meals (2 servings each), 5 sides, snacks, or sweets for $99.

We opted for The Starter Set as we also get meal kits, get takeout, and cook on a weekly basis. It was nice to mix it up with some quick healthyish vegetable options, but for the full price of $69 I don’t think it’s worth it. It’s unlikely this will make it into my regular rotation.
