An exacting rendition of Western popular culture enjoys recognition for rendering a phenomenon that’s constantly in flux, inert. America’s collective consciousness, in turn, rewards each memetic creator with the temporary sensation of actualization and accomplishment in American zeitgeist.
The warmer weather such as we were lucky to experience this past weekend gives us the urge to swap out those seemingly drab winter clothes for light, airy and carefree outfits that haven’t seen the light of day in seven months.
I was psyched when Travis, my favorite bikini waxer ever, casually invited me to come in for a “Bikini Blast.” Being almost cult leader-y obsessed with everything-off waxing (plus, an ahem… investigative beauty journalist by trade), I was already vaguely familiar with the treatment. To put it bluntly: it’s a facial for your private parts. You know, steaming, peels, masques, extractions, buffing — the works.
If there were a new restaurant that currently encapsulates Ballard and its late trend of thoughtfully mixing old buildings with modern ideas, it would be The Gerald.
Designers put a twist on Western wear and transport us to the Southwest with Navajo belts, moccasins, tribal prints and vintage washes. Asos, UK’s largest independent online fashion and beauty retailer (provides free shipping and returns), recently premiered their Men’s Spring/Summer 2012 look book where they embraced this Southwestern trend. Their “Laurel Canyon” line – a modern take on 1970’s and Western clothing – is tailored, affordable and relevant to this season’s runways.
Spring is out in full force in Seattle and with it, the opportunity to eat and drink all manner of lovely things apropos of more gentle weather. Of course it’s also a time when we all wish we could stretch our wings and fly off to some far-flung global destination, but if your job and responsibilities don’t allow you to flee the floods just yet, why not bring the world to your fingertips in the form of libations and nosh?
