Crave Factor:

Spring break has done a lot of damage to tequila’s reputation, but any connoisseur will tell you that the fabled Mexican spirit is just as respectable as its more esteemed counterparts. A recipient of the Gold “Best in Class” award at the 2010 International Wine and Spirits Competition, Milagro Silver is a shining example of “good” tequila. Great, in fact — especially in the Dog Fighter #2 ($9), which combines hints of cherry, orange, lemon and peach with the distinctive agave flavor. If you weren’t a tequila drinker before, now is definitely a good time to start.

The Not So Secret Recipe:

  • 2 ounces Milagro Silver
  • ½ ounce Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
  • ½ ounce Cointreau
  • ½ ounce lemon juice
  • 2 dashes peach bitters

Combine all ingredients and shake with ice. Double strain and serve in a cocktail glass. Garnish with two cherries and a candied hibiscus flower

Fun Fact:

Its name connotes aviation history but according to Ryan Minch, Little Water Cantina’s dutiful bar manager, this libation is also named after “The Dog Fighter,” a 2004 novel by Marc Bojanowski. Set in the 1940s, the story follows an unnamed narrator through the untamed streets of Baja City. Eventually, the young protagonist becomes involved with an underground fighting circuit that pits able-bodied men against ferocious attack dogs, while wealthy businessmen gamble on the outcome.
