New Grub Alert: Fogon Mexicana

Authentic no-fuss Mexican cuisine on Capitol Hill.

East Pine welcomes Fogon, which opened its doors in late August in a space that has been unlucky for past businesses, including Kurrent and Kiki. The owners, however, are up for the challenge. Specializing in traditional Mexican cuisine,

they are prepared to refine their menu to suit the Capitol Hill crowd.

The tortillas are handmade, the salsa is fresh, and the menu offers classic Mexican dishes like Enchiladas ($10.95), Street Tacos ($8.95) with choice of al pastor (pork), carne asade, chicken, or lengua (beef tongue), and Carne Asada Burritos ($10.95) with flame broiled carne asada, whole beans and rice.

The Ceviche ($8.95) is fresh; the shrimp marinated in lime juice are tender and juicy with tomatoes, onions, cilantro, cucumber, carrots, and topped with avocado slices. The Flautas ($7.95), rolled up crispy tacos (resembling tacquitos) are filled with chorizo, shredded chicken, or beef.

Fogon also features Milanesa ($12.95), a thin cut carne asada or chicken breast lightly breaded and simmerd until slightly crispy and topped with fresh onions, tomatoes, jalapeño pepes and cucumber and Pescado Frito ($13.95), a whole seasoned tilapia fish served with white rice and a Caesar salad.

Happy hour runs from 3-6pm and 9-close daily, featuring drink and $5 food specials. Come try one of their tequila-inspired cocktails or tasty margaritas, including the Ultimate Margarita, made from scratch with fresh lime, Conmemorativo añejo, orange liqueur and simple syrup muddled together.

The staff are friendly, the food is simple and satisfying. With seven varieties of margaritas, a low-key atmosphere, and delicious, approachable food, Fogon is worth a visit. Join the formal Grand Opening celebration Thursday, September 20th with live mariachi music and food+drink specials.
