Make your own party hat and dance the afternoon away.
What: The Burke Museum will hold a fun, family friendly, two-day event where guests can try their hand at hat-making — and their feet at Samba dancing! All ages are invited to come and show off their dance skills (or lack thereof), with the help of three extremely talented teachers and artists. In addition to Samba lessons, guests will walk away with their very own screen-printed, hand-made Carnival party hat — perfect for ringing in 2012.
Who: On the first day of this Samba soiree, artists Eduardo Mendonça and Dora Oliveira of Show Brazil will show off their superb moves. Mendonca, a Native Brazilian, has lived in Seattle for 10 years. An outstanding performer, he was featured in the video for Paul Simon’s, “Born at the Right Time.” Oliveira began her career as a professional dancer in 1976, when she joined Brazilian group Exaltao Bahia. Since then, she has toured the world as a principal dancer for Olodum, a world-renowned Samba troupe, and is a lead dancer for Show Brazil.
The second day of this event welcomes Dina Blade to the stage for some serious Samba moves. Blade is a Seattle jazz vocalist whose repertoire includes American jazz, blues and Brazilian bossa nova. She is also an accomplished dancer, teacher and recording artist.
Both days of this event will feature Pacific Northwest artist Carl Smool, who will assist guests as they craft party hats in the style of Carnival Venice.
When: From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 29 and Friday, Dec. 30. Hat-making will take place throughout both days, while Samba is scheduled from 10 to 10:45 a.m. and 1 to 1:45 p.m.
