Food Porn: Ma’ono Fried Chicken & Whiskey

Hawaiian fusion and the best fried chicken.

In this edition of Food Porn, we feature Ma’ono Fried Chicken & Whiskey, transformed by Chef Mark Fuller from the more upscale Spring Hill Restaurant to a more casual, more affordable Hawaiian inspired restaurant. If you’re looking for good fried chicken, you have come to the right place.

Some of the classics from Spring Hill have found their way onto the menu at Ma’ono, such as the Spring Hill 1/2 lb. Beef Burger and the smokey and rich pork and ham-broth Saimin Noodles served with pork belly with crackling skin, toasted seaweed, mustard cabbage, egg, and fishcake.

The featured Fried Chicken is one whole chicken that has been soaked in buttermilk, dredged, and double fried in peanut oil resulting in a combination of super moist, tender chicken and crispy skin. Served with gochujang [a savory Korean sauce] and Chinese mustard and a side of kimchi and rice, this is the perfect fried chicken experience. Order in advance.

Manapua (Steamed BBQ Pork Buns), the Hawaiian version of “hum bao,” is served with a shoyu-harissa dip and pickled cucumbers. Other sides include Spam Musubi (a Hawaiian snack; think sushi with Spam instead of fish on rice and wrapped with nori), Spiced Pork Cracklins, Curry & Bacon Fried Rice, and Warm Portuguese Sweet Bread.

The Banana Cream Pie has a layer of creamy housemade banana pudding, fresh bananas, and a buttery crust for a decadent finish to a satisfying meal. For a cold treat, the Popcorn Ice Cream, seeped with real popcorn for pure popcorn flavor. Frankly, it’s hard to stop at one bite.

Open daily from 5-10pm. Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 2pm. Bottomless Mimosas for $12 are not to be missed! Traditional brunch offerings include the French Toast with fried chicken nuggest and sausage gravy, Kassler Ham Benedict with two poached eggs on an English muffin and drizzled with an herbed hollandaise, and the House Corned Beef Hash.  Entrees with a little Hawaiian flair include the Loco Moco with wood grilled chuck, Portuguese sausage, brown gravy, rice, and grilled pineapple, Oxtail Soup, and Kalua Pig & Yolk Potstickers to name a few.

Whether you’re craving some of Seattle’s best fried chicken or some Hawaiian inspired fare, grab your friends and come quickly.
