About

Spectrum Dance Theater presents The Miraculous Mandarin, a gritty contemporary vision of composer Bela Bartok’s controversial early 20th century ballet and modern music work in six FREE public performances at Hing Hay Park in the Chinatown-International District.

In an ironic twist, The Miraculous Mandarin, Bartok’s post-World War I commentary on European society and its fear of “Oriental” otherness, will be set in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District. This iteration of Byrd’s Mandarin is unintentionally site-specific in that way. The audience will be in Hing Hay Park, and view the performance taking place in the former Hanil Garden Restaurant in the Bush Hotel. First presented in 2006 at the Moore Theater, this version continues Byrd’s interest in pushing the edge of how dance theater is presented and changing the audience viewing relationship from passive to active.

Please be advised: The performance is not intended for children.
