Brunch with a View: The Nest at Thompson Hotel

The Nest is a rooftop bar at the top of the Thompson Hotel in downtown Seattle. It’s a lovely place to drink some artisanal cocktails and take in the elusive sunshine. When I heard there was a weekend brunch, I was all in!

As the tale goes, brunch was originally devised for those nursing a Sunday hangover. Hungover or not, I love a boozy and leisurely brunch. And this one proved to be just that! The only dampener to my afternoon were the grey clouds looming over us.

We’re in this weird transition weather where you don’t know whether the days will be sunny, windy, or rainy—though this week’s forecast looks promising! The Nest has toasty fire pits to warm you up in case it’s a windy day. There is a cozy indoor space as well, and it is a nice contrast to the sprawling patio outside. There was a nip in the air that morning, and we got ourselves some drinks and settled in by the fire. We tried the nouveau old-fashioned, which was simple and suave. The thyme after thyme, was a refreshing rosé cocktail with blueberries and a distinctive, herby, thyme flavor. There is also a drink called the flamingo, served inside a huge rose gold flamingo to be shared with the table.

Surprise, surprise! The sun revealed itself from underneath the dark clouds, and the day turned out to be unexpectedly nice and bright! Being relatively new in Seattle, it is not uncommon to find me ooh-ing and aah-ing over the city’s charming water bodies and icy-hued mountains glittering in the horizon. But The Nest had even the most nonchalant locals gasping over its spectacular view.

The food here is equally Instagram-worthy and delicious. The food is artfully presented and  served as elegant gourmet bites. Think shrimp skewers, small poke bowls and mini berry tarts. We had the avocado toast, with pickled serrano chili peppers adding a nice spicy touch. Next up were the grilled skewers—beef, chicken, shrimp and peppers. While the meat was tender, the skewers were pretty average and nothing to write home about.

The best part about this place are the showstopping views of puget sound and downtown Seattle’s stunning skyline. You can see the Seattle Great Wheel by the waterfront, ships sailing by the harbor and the Olympic Mountains silhouetted in the distance. Summer officially kicks on Thursday, June 21st and this is a trendy place to hang out or take your out-of-town visitors to. While brunch is always a good idea, I’d love to take in the sunset views next time.
